Why paint on feathers?

February 13, 2018

Hello! My name is Amanda and I am the owner of Creations N Critters.

I wanted to share a little bit about how I got started painting on

feathers, and why I enjoy it over canvas painting.

I saw my first painting that was done on a feather while I was in Nicaragua (that is a crazy story for another day!) I was so impressed by the tiny, yet perfectly done, painting that I had to bring home three of them!

At the time, I had been painting for a few years and LOVED working on canvas, but, I kept looking at those little feathers.  After some encouragement, I decided to try it.  Well...like anything you first start, I was NOT very good.  I just didn't have the skill or knowledge of how to keep the feather barbs from separating. It was a good while before I tried again, this time on a much larger and heavier feather (peacock tail feather to be exact).  I tried something a little different and...my first painting done on a feather was completed! We thought it was fitting that my first success was a peacock...painted on a peacock feather!

I posted the painting up on etsy...and it sold within a week! I was shocked! I decided to do a few more peacocks, and they all sold! I wanted to branch out, so I did a few more paintings, mostly animals as they are my favorite to paint.

I have sold several of my paintings and just simply LOVE doing them! Painting is one of the most relaxing things for me to do! I think painting on a feather adds so much complexity to the process and the final piece. It takes so much care and concentration to get it just right, everything else around you seems to melt away.  These unique items never come out EXACTLY the same, but each one is made with love and is truly a piece of myself!

Here is one of my personal favorites, a small fox done on a goose feather!

I also do custom requests! I have done a silky chicken for a good family friend (shown below) and I am working on a bear painting for a close friend! I am best at painting animals, but would love to try and do some of those gorgeous landscape ones with the little cabin in the background!
